Overview

The Building Mechanic conducts troubleshooting and diagnostics on mechanical, electrical, plumbing, HVAC, and facility equipment.

Shift Hours: Monday to Friday; 7:00am-3:00pm

Basic Qualification:

  • High School education preferred.

  • Must be able to read, write, and understand English.

  • Prefers five years' experience in general mechanical work and maintenance of equipment.

  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Summary of Position:

Assess and troubleshoot issues, reporting complex situations to management. Possess a comprehensive understanding of building mechanical systems and automated software. Perform daily rounds, recording discrepancies, and addressing hazards. Implement corrective and preventative maintenance procedures, communicate effectively with management, and work independently. Provide equipment status reports, recommend upgrades, supervise maintenance personnel, and participate in a rotating after-hours call-in schedule with 24/7 priority emergency call responsibilities.

  • Check, analyze, and diagnose problems with mechanical, electrical, plumbing systems, pumps, fans, HVAC equipment, roof issues and other supporting facility equipment.

  • Ability to assess the situation with problem equipment, initially troubleshoot the problem and referring difficult or dangerous instances to management.

  • Complete understanding of the buildings mechanical systems including the automated computer software.

  • Daily rounds of buildings consisting of walking through all floors recording any discrepancies such as room temperatures, leaks, or any situation that may be hazards to the university.

  • Familiar with procedures for corrective and preventative maintenance program.

  • Ability to communicate with management, work unsupervised and deliver positive results. Write reports about status of equipment and make necessary recommendations to upgrade equipment.

  • Work with and supervise other maintenance personnel with daily assignments.

  • Mandatory rotating after hour call-in schedule.

  • 24/7 Priority emergency call responsibilities.

  • The employee must regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.

  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

  • May be required to remove ice & snow, set up classrooms and meeting rooms, change fluorescent tubes & clean lighting fixtures.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee occasionally works in high, precarious places and in outside weather conditions and is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, fumes, or airborne particles, and toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
